Original Russian Crime

These days a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) controlled now by the Russian invaders. The scientists of IAEA were led through the ZNPP territory by a Russian representative to a hole made by an artillery shell. It was apparent that the shell came from the direction of territories occupied by Russia. But the Russian “guide” made an effort to “explain” that when the shell hits the ground, it (somehow) jumps and turns around, so that it actually must have arrived from the Ukrainian side.

This lie is very typical for Russians. This isn’t just an exaggeration or ideological framing. This is a complete and absolute bullshit… You know, “jumping artillery shells” – the ones produced specifically to turn around after impact to make Russia look bad. But as one German guy once said, the people would sooner believe a big lie than a small one, because when the people hear the big lie they cannot imagine that someone would lie in such a shameless way.

Narratives of Invasion

The main peculiarity of Russian propaganda is that Russians rarely try to craft a single attractive and consistent story. Instead they throw around many different (quite often contradicting) messages… and then they see which ones work. This might seem a strange, stupid or even schizophrenic approach, but the sheer number of people who listen to and follow the Russian narratives all around the world is astonishing.

The trick is that each message works for a different audience. This is a very postmodern approach where social bubbles and prejudices of various groups are exploited. The main aim is not to prove to the world that Russia is a great country (even Russian propagandists realize this is an impossible task), but to plant the seeds of doubt and distrust among the many big and small forces of the West, to make them feud with one another and to make them weak.

Плагіат – злочин без терміну давності

Коли я вчився в університеті, заборона плагіату для мене була інтуїтивно очевидним правилом, десь на рівні з тим, що на лекціях не можна шуміти, або з тим, що в кафетерії не можна жбурлятися їжею. І я не вважаю таке моє сприйняття ознакою якоїсь великої своєї “правильності”. Ну от просто нащо плагіатити? Шоб шо? Отримаєш стєпєнь і будеш тіпа умним? Якщо ти дебіл, то ніякий папірець цього не приховає.

Антиросія

Зазвичай ідентифікація від противного – це ніби ознака несамостійності. Скажімо, якщо ви намагаєтеся робити все “не так, як Х“, то ви все одно залишаєтеся від цього самого Х по суті своїй залежними, просто зі знаком “мінус”. Тому до 24-го лютого поточного року я намагався усякому визначенню будь-чого шукати позитивний модус.

Проте дедалі більше я усвідомлюю, що ідеальний з моєї точки зору суспільний лад справді ніщо інше, як радикальна протилежність “рускому міру”. Москва вживає в звинуваченнях на адресу Заходу це слово – “Антиросія” – мовляв це те, у що Захід перетворює Україну. На жаль, закид занадто поспішний – Україні є ще над чим попрацювати на цьому шляху. Але утопічний стан, до якого ми справді прямуємо, і в якому я хотів би жити, важко описати краще, аніж словом “Антиросія”.

“Peace, peace, peace…”

If there is one thing that truly disgusts me in the world’s reaction to Russian aggression is the naivety of the abstract calls to “stop the war” – without clarification WHO must stop it and HOW.

Such attitude trivializes the immense ongoing suffering of people in Mariupol, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and many other Ukrainian cities and villages. Like it’s not a true genocide, not the most ruinous war in Europe since WWII, but a mere fistfight of some teenagers in the school yard: “Oh, Ukraine, why can’t you simply be friends with Rashiya?”

Russia’s Biggest Lie

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is built on a lie. And I want everyone in the world to understand that. This whole war – since the annexation of Crimea and fake “referendums” in Donbas in 2014 and up to the full-scale invasion on the 24th of February in 2022 – is based on a terribly, perversly fake pretense. Russian president as well as many Russian politicians on many occasions said that Russian speakers in Ukraine were somehow oppressed or that they are threatened by Ukrainian nationalists. This is the most absurdist nonsense I have ever heard in my lifetime. This I am saying as a person who was speaking predominantly Russian for the most part of my life.

Про гідність

Я належу до людей, що так і не розчарувалися в жодній з новітніх українських революцій. Передовсім тому, що мої очікування не були надмірними, як це зазвичай буває у людей. Але також і тому, що я усіляко стараюся мислити в категоріях наслідків.

“Земля обітована” Барака Обами

Для мене книга Барака Обами стала першою за багато років аудіокнигою. І усім іншим я радив би її саме не читати в паперовому форматі, а слухати аудіо в оригіналі, адже Обама читає свою книгу сам, виразно і з інтонаціями, які додають динаміки і об’ємності його розповіді. Його історія про труднощі роботи президента наймогутнішої країни світу неабияк підтримувала мене впродовж останніх пари тижнів.

Буття “поза політикою”

Щоби зрозуміти, чи може спорт, мистецтво чи будь-яка інша сфера суспільного життя бути поза політикою, треба спершу зрозуміти, що таке політика – і все стане на свої місця.

Занепад влади

Почну із застереження. В українській версії книжка називається “Занепад влади“, що є не цілком точним перекладом оригінальної назви (The End of Power), але відповідає суті. Сам автор, Мойзес Наїм, неодноразово зазначає, що принаймні на цьому етапі описані ним процеси ведуть радше не до зникнення реальної влади, а до її розмиття, до занепаду (decay). Більше того, він цілком свідомий, що навіть у форматі всього лише занепаду, а не кінця влади його ідея може здатися суперечливою, адже ми спостерігаємо нині, як розрив між багатими і бідними зростає, як великі корпорації укрупнюються і розширюють сфери своєї діяльності, як продовжується міжнародна концентрація медіа-сфери, як в Росії та Китаї посилюється тиранія і контроль за діями громадян і т. д. Про який кінець чи занепад взагалі може бути мова?
